I get answered this question every once in a while. Usually when a client is trying to become one. I liked her answer. But from a business perspective it is more a question of whether the market cares what you think on a specific topic. Some topics are more niche or targeted than others. So follow up questions are simple: 1) what topic do you want to be a thought leader in, 2) what gives you credibility, and 3) if you were, what would you say?

If they can answer those three questions you can develop a plan to get you where you want to go. If you can’t, maybe we need to rethink our brand strategy.

That was the question I was recently asked by my friend Vivienne Neale. I wasn’t sure how to reply. After all, we all have our “thought leaders” whom we follow. What Makes You a Thought Leader?
